On March 27, Jody and Cindy Dixon closed the sale of Dixon's Torchlite at 1276 E. Green Bay St. to Domenico and Salvatore Badalamento, the brothers behind Luigi's. That single transaction, followed a few weeks later by IHOP's liquor-license filing three blocks east, is doing something Shawano has not seen in a while. The evening dining center of gravity is quietly pulling east out of Main Street and stretching along E. Green Bay St., and by the time Thursdayz @ Franklin wraps in late August, the corridor you drive every day is going to feel different.
If you have lived here through a few summers, you already know the pattern. Main Street gets the concerts and the fest weekends. E. Green Bay St. gets the drive-throughs. That split is the thing that is changing this year, and it is worth understanding piece by piece rather than as a general "things are opening" roundup.
What the Badalamentos Are Actually Building
The Torch Lite building has been feeding Shawano for 45 years. Anello's opened in 1981 and ran until the Dixons bought it in February 2022 and rebranded it Dixon's Torchlite. Four years later, the Badalamentos have it, and the plan is not a Luigi's satellite.
Domenico Badalamento has said the new concept, opening under a new name in mid-May, is aimed at prime steak, high-end bourbons, and a full wine program. Service starts with dinner only, with lunch and Sunday brunch phased in. That is a different animal from Luigi's pasta-and-pizza identity on the other side of town, and it is the first upscale supper club addition to the E. Green Bay St. side in years.
Two things worth watching if you eat there in the first month:
- Whether the bourbon list actually goes deep or lands in the same 40-bottle range as the existing Shawano steakhouses
- Whether Sunday brunch materializes on the timeline promised, since brunch is where most rebrands stall
The IHOP Hybrid Nobody Was Expecting
A block and a half east, at 1398 E. Green Bay St., IHOP filed for a class B beer and liquor license with the city. The intent, per the filing, is to convert the restaurant into an Applebee's Neighborhood Bar and Grill + IHOP dual-brand location.
This is the model Dine Brands has been rolling into smaller markets nationally, and Shawano has not had an Applebee's before. For residents, the practical read is straightforward. The east corridor gets a full bar and a dinner menu at a price point that has been missing between the fast-casual options and the supper clubs, and the pancake side does not go anywhere.

Two rooms with cocktails and dinner menus, on the corridor most residents already drive home on, is the shift. Whether it holds through winter is a separate question. For summer, it changes where people are going after 7 p.m.
Why Thursday Nights Anchor Downtown Again
Franklin Park at 235 S. Washington St. runs Thursdayz @ Franklin from June through August, 6 p.m. start, free, chairs-on-the-grass format. Shawano Parks and Rec Director Matt Hendricks confirmed the series returns in the same window with an expanded music lineup this year.
If you have been going for years, the format is familiar. Two things are new enough to plan around:
Two Dates to Actually Circle
- July 2: Kids From Wisconsin, the traveling statewide show choir, is on the schedule. This is a bigger production than the usual weekly band and worth arriving early for chair placement.
- July 30: Milly & the Mayhem, a variety and party band, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. with a 50/50 raffle. Different crowd, later finish, food and drink vendors on site.
The reason Thursday matters more this year is the corridor math above. A free concert two blocks off Main, ending around 8:30, now feeds a dinner corridor that has real capacity for the walk-off crowd. That was not true last summer.
ShawanoFest's Franklin Park Move
ShawanoFest is bringing back the food truck rally residents flagged as the best part of last year, and it is layering three things into Franklin Park that were not there before:
- The Farmer's Market is running extended hours until 1 p.m., overlapping the fest instead of closing before it starts
- Amphitheater music runs throughout the day rather than as a single evening set
- Family activities anchor the park side, keeping foot traffic circulating between Main Street craft vendors and the park
The extended market hour is the small change that matters most. If you have ever tried to hit both the market and the fest and been forced to pick, this is the fix.
Stubborn Brothers Is Programming Past the Fish Fry
Stubborn Brothers Brewery at 220 S. Main St. has been the downtown gravity well since it took over the old dance hall. The taproom, the fish fry, and the Crescent Ballroom weddings are the anchors. What is new this year is programming that reads more like a small venue calendar than a brewery event list.
Saturday, June 13, they are running a Dueling Pianos dinner and show from 5 p.m. It sells out. If you have not been to one there before, the ballroom setup with the original hardwood floor and brick walls holds around 200 and puts every seat in reasonable earshot.
Shawano Octoberfest returns October 5, with a German menu inside the restaurant alongside the Octoberfest and salted caramel seasonal beers. That one is worth mentioning in July because the ballroom Octoberfest ticket has gone earlier each of the last two years.
What to Watch Through August
The honest test of the corridor shift is whether the new spots hold their opening momentum. Three things to keep an eye on if you live here and want to read the market rather than guess at it:
- Whether the Badalamento supper club stays reservation-heavy through July, or whether the summer bump fades once the Green Bay weekenders stop routing through
- Whether the Applebee's+IHOP conversion pulls dinner traffic from existing Main Street sit-downs, or expands the total pie
- Whether Thursdayz @ Franklin attendance stays flat or grows now that the post-concert dinner options have doubled
None of this changes what Shawano is. The lake still sets the summer calendar, the Wolf River still runs the same channels it did last year, and most weeknights still end on someone's back deck. What is changing is the middle of the week between 6 and 9 p.m., and the geography of where you spend it.
If you have been in your house long enough to remember when the Torch Lite was Anello's, you already understand the shape of this. Buildings on E. Green Bay St. hold ownership for a long time and then trade in clusters. This is one of those clusters. The next few months are when the pattern sets.
